Acer palmatum 'Saiho'
Rare Saiho Dwarf Japanese Maple Tree
Zones 5-9
'Saiho' makes a perfect bonsai and a great dwarf Japanese maple tree for your garden. This Japanese maple's leaves emerge in the early spring with small chartreuse green leaves with a bright purple red border outline. 'Saiho' is a vigorous dwarf that has densely packed leaves in an upright compact and dense shape that is 5 ft by 4 ft in 15 years.
This tree's trunk will in a short amount of time produce a very large trunk, which is one of the many attributes that makes it great for bonsai. The larger trunk artificially gives the tree a much older and more mature appearance to that of a dwarf tree in the landscape. Secondary growth in the summer produces little leaves that are some of smallest of any of the Japanese maples. These small leaves are ideal for a bonsai pinching technique used to decrease the size of the foliage. 'Saiho' is absolutely perfect for small spaces in the garden, containers, bonsai, conifer beds, fairy gardens, and rock gardens.
