Machilus thunbergii is a large evergreen shrub or tree with large, glossy green leaves.  Machilus thunbergii (aka Persea thunbergii) is a fantastic large shrub or can be pruned into a small tree that has very dark green, glossy foliage and makes a great background plant in the garden.  This is a seed strain from the most northern populations of the species in North Korea and have survived for many years with little to no damage in the Raleigh, NC area.  We only have a few seedlings and these have fairly pale green leaves due to reduced fertility.  Under higher fertilizer levels the plants are black green but very quickly outgrow their pots, so we intentionally hold them back.  They will quickly become darker green once planted and have a little more fertilizer.  Thanks to Mike Chelednik for use of his photos.
