Sarcococca orientalis
Sarcococca orientalis
Sarcococca orientalis (Christmas box, oriental sarcococca, sweet box) is a broadleaf evergreen sub shrub with glossy evergreen leaves and small, extremely fragrant, white flowers in late winter. Sarcococca orientalis is one of our best winter flowering small shrubs/ tall groundcovers we grow. It blooms before Daphne odora and is extremely fragrant. The glossy, evergreen foliage of Sarcococca orientalis looks good year round and is great in most any shaded site. Sarcococca orientalis is fairly drought resistant once established but will not appreciate a wet site. Well drained soil is best. Sarcococca orientalis makes a wonderful mass planting when planted in drifts around a woodland garden, can be used as a foundation planting on the north side of your house, and works well with a wide range of other perennial and woody plants. The wonderful late winter fragrance of Sarcococca orientalis is reason enough to grow this wonderful landscape plant and with the addition of beautiful foliage, makes it a must have for garden plant.
