Acer palmatum 'Firefly' leaves emerge in the spring with a bright cherry red on the outside of the leaf and orange in the center . As the leaf expands the orange slowly turn a lime green with the red outside holding steady. As the leaf matures and summer approaches the leaves almost seem to change daily going from orange to pink and everywhere in between. With fall comes a color change of the leaves to a bright fiery red.  The growth habit of Acer palmatum 'Firefly' is fairly upright and you get less spreading than with other ghost type variegated maples. You should expect 'Firefly' to reach 10-12 ft high in 10 years. For the best color show you will need to protect Acer palmatum 'Firefly' from the hot afternoon sun. As the heat will cause the colors to fad.
