Acer wuyuanense or Chocolate Maple is a fairly rare maple seldom seen in gardens.  I has fortunate to obtain 1 scionwood piece over 30 years ago from the first plant of this species brought into North America.  Acer wuyuanense looks similar to Acer palmatum but has rich, chocolate colored new growth in the spring and into summer.  My plant has been fairly slow growing and is about 15' tall in 30 years but it does appear to be fairly fast growing when young.  Acer wuyuanense makes a beautiful specimen and is worthy of a place in any woodland garden.
