Adina rubella 'Purple Flower' (Chinese Buttonbush) is similar to our native Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis; however, it has much smaller leaves and flowers and becomes a larger plant. We had customers that said the flowers look like a Covid virus and many bought it just because of that. Interesting and fascinating how people's minds work. Regardless of its name, Adina rubella is great in the garden and can tolerate fairly damp soil. It will become a large shrub if allowed to do so, but can easily be cut back (to the ground nearly if you want) to keep it much lower. For those of you into flower arranging - the stems of Adina rubella are fantastic cut in bud stage, open flowers, or after the pistals (spikey parts) fall off. I've had them in a vase for several weeks and they looked great.
