Calycanthus floridus 'Athens' is a wonderful variant of our native Sweet Betsy with its soft greenish/yellow/ivory flowers that are INTENSELY fragrant - especially later in the day when temperatures are higher. Calycanthus floridus 'Athens' is a great addition to a native plant collection where it will slowly form a colony (it spreads by underground runners). Calycanthus floridus is best used in mass plantings where it will produce a nice colony and will reward you early in the spring with its intensely fragrant flowers that have a delightful fruity aroma - a mix of strawberry, pineapple and banana. and in the Fall when the leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow.
