Camellia gauchowensis is a Camellia species rarely seen in gardens but deserves more use. In appearance it looks similar to Camellia yuhsienensis which has been used extensively in Camellia hybridization. We feel that Camellia gauchowensis is a much nicer looking plant, with bright, medicum green, glossy leaves and white flowers that appear whiter than C. yuhsienensis. Both species are excellent and highly recommended by us. C. gauchowensis is a must have for species collectors and should be considered in future breeding programs. It is a large shrub or small tree with small white blooms in late fall/early winter. These plants were propagated from the hardy specimen at the Stephen F. Austin Arboretum in Nacogdoches, Texas, which survived -4F without damage in the winter of 2022.
