Camellia japonica 'Jack's' is an evergreen shrub with green leaves and watermelon red flowers. Camellia japonica 'Jack's' is one of those nearly unknown varieties that should become very well known. Camellia japonica 'Jack's' has beautiful, formal double, watermelon red flowers produced in abundance and over a very long time. This trait is very important in our area since we commonly start getting blooms on camellias in January during a warm spell, followed by cold, then warm, cold,... open flowers get frosted and fall off but buds that are still fairly tight typically survive. Camellia japonica 'Jack's long bloom time allows it to look good in early winter and have flowers freeze off several times and still have enough buds to put on a nice spring display. The photo of a plant in my garden was taken in late March and still has this many flowers after having early flowers frozen off at least 2-3 times this year! Camellia japonica 'Jack's' is arguable one of the best all time landscape plants due to its very compact habit (plant in photo never pruned), fairly slow growth rate (it won't outgrow its space for a long time), excellent leaf quality - well you get the picture - an awesome plant! Camellia japonica 'Jack's would make a fantastic, low growing hedge, great in mass plantings, and as a specimen. Camellia japonica 'Jack's' is also very cold hardy and I've never seen foliage damage here due to bad winter conditions.
