Cornus sanguinea 'Compressa' (bloodtwig dogwood, common dogwood, European dogwood) is a deciduous shrub with small, heavily puckered leaves.  Cornus sanguinea 'Compressa' is a most undogwood like dogwood due to its very unusual heavily puckered leaves and very columnar growth habit.  The most amazing specimen of Cornus sanquinea 'Compressa' I've ever seen is near the office at Hillier Arboretum in England.  The plant is clearly very old and has done something I've seen no where else (at least not to this extent) and has produced a ring of suckers around the original main plant, then this ring produced another ring of suckers.......  The oldest plant in the center was about 10' tall, then the next ring a little shorter, next ring a little shorter...  it gave the appearance of a giant, many tiers green wedding cake!  STUNNING!  Plants in my garden haven't shown this suckering habit so far.  Cornus sanguinea 'Compressa' could be used to produce a short, deciduous hedge, interesting in mass plantings or makes a stunning specimen.
