Cunninghamia konishii is a stunning blue foliaged form of the Taiwanese China Fir! The needles on C. konishii are a bit shorter than C. lanciolata and the growth habit is a bit more tight and dense. We obtained this clone from the Atlanta Botanical Garden many years ago and have been greatly impressed with it. The younger needles on young trees are very sharp (and not fun to take cuttings for propagation) and the growth habit is pyramidal. These plants need to be staked when they are young until they develop a strong central leader. This issue is common in rooted conifers and is referred to as plagiotropic. Basically meaning that a branch taken from the side of a mature plant will want to grow sideways. The only cutting that would grow straight up, would be the terminal. In time, the plants outgrow plagiotropic issues and will become a strong, upright growing plant. The stunning blue coloration on this is amazing. In the SE USA we can't easily (if at all) grow blue spruce or some of the other blue foliaged conifers - this one takes our heat and stays brilliant blue! WOW!
