Daphniphyllum teijsmannii 'Mountain Dove is one of the most striking variegated shrub/tree that I've ever seen. When the late Dr. J C Raulston brought this cultivar (and 2 other variegated cultivars) in the the USA in roughly 1990, he handed me the 3 small plants and asked to propagate them.  I refused because he paid a small fortune for them, and I wasn't willing to risk killing them.  I told Dr. Raulston that I would practice with propagating the green species.  LONG story, but I tried for over 30 years with no luck at all.  Daphniphyllum 'Mountain Dove'  is notorious for being extremely difficult to graft (this seems to be the only viable option for propagation).  In desperation, I tried something that made absolutely no sense to me at all and finally SUCCESS!!!  Still extremely difficult and will never be available in large quantities, which reflects in the pricing.  This is sort of the Holy Grail for rare plant collectors and we finally have a few plants available this year.  Daphniphyllum 'Mountain Dove' initially grows like a large shrub but in time can become a small tree.  Oddly leaves become much larger as the plant ages.  Daphniphyllum 'Mountain Dove' grows best in light shade or nearly full sun and makes a stunning specimen in any garden.  IF you live on the wild side, maybe consider a small grove (we are planting 5-7 of them along a path in our woodland garden to make a small grove).  Daphniphyllum 'Mountain Dove' is extremely RARE and seldom seen even in large botanical gardens. We have 2-3 larger 3 gallon plants available at our retail nursery for pick up only (we can't ship 3 gallon plants) for $500 each.
