Pittosporum tobira 'Tall N Tough' is an evergreen shrub with small oval shaped green leaves and white fading to yellow flowers. Piottosporum tobira 'Tall N Tough' was selected by the late (and great) J. C. Raulston after the extremely cold winter of 1986(?) when Raleigh NC and the JCR Arboretum went to a record breaking -9 degrees f. J. C. found the plant growing the the arboretum and it showed no damage at this temperature (the species would typically have been killed outright or severely damaged). The original plant was growing under the shade of a large tree and had stretched out reaching for the sun. J. C. saw that it was "tall" and "tough" so hence the name 'Tall N Tough'. Sadly J. C. hadn't propagated plants from this original and planted them out in full sun. The plant is NOT tall, but is amazing tough. In the sun it is fairly dwarf and slowly makes a 3-4' dense mound. We have grown the plant in the field in full sun and one winter had a sunny day with near gale force winds and -1 degree f. ZERO damage to 'Tall N Tough'. Maybe better if it had been named 'Tiny N Tough' but regardless of the name, it is a stunning addition to the cold hardy evergreen shrub line!!! Bonus is the massive quantities of white fading to yellow flowers that are extremely fragrant! WOW! A must have! Limited quantities currently but propagation more ASAP.
