Sassafras tzumu (Chinese Sassafras) is a remarkable deciduous tree with large leaves, large clusters of small sulphur yellow flowers in late winter and fantastic lobed leaves. Fall color can be a mixture of yellow, gold, red, and purple. These are seedling grown and will likely vary some. This is very different from the Sassafras albidum from the USA - Sassafras albidum makes very large colonies via root suckers whereas Sassafras tzumu is a large singe stemmed tree. In cultivation, Chinese sassafras usually is less than 50' tall but can get much taller in the wild (100' or so). One of our favorite trees in the garden (we planted several we like it so much) and we very rarely get any seed production since it flowers in winter and fruits usually freeze out. Fortunately we've had some very mild winters and finally have seeds in cold storage and a very small number of seedlings available this year. One of our most requested plants and very rarely available.
