Trachycarpus fortunei "Taylor's" (windmill palm, Chinese windmill palm)  is an evergreen tree with very large palmate leaves.  Trachycarpus fortunei "Taylor's" is a seed strain of windmill palm that has demonstrated to be much more cold hardy than typical windmill palms.  The original grandmother tree was undamaged by the -9 F degree cold that Raleigh, NC had during the mid 1980's.  Trachycarpus fortunei "Taylor's" is slow growing for the first few years but once established, can put on tremendous yearly growth.  My largest plant in the garden had 3-4' of trunk for several years, then put on 12' of additional trunk growth in a single year!  Trachycarpus fortunei "Taylor's" does best in a slightly protected site to prevent damage to its huge bold leaves that add a sub-tropical or tropical feel to the garden.  Trachycarpus fortunei "Taylor's" is among the more cold hardy trunking palms and grows best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil.
