Vernicia fordii "Cold Hardy"
Vernicia fordii "Cold Hardy"
Vernicia fordii "Cold Hardy" (Tung Oil Tree) is a small/medium sized deciduous (evergreen in warm climates) tree with large leaves and large clusters of fragrant whitish flowers. Vernicia fordii "Cold Hardy" is a seed strain of Tung Oii Tree that has been reliably hardy in the Raleigh, NC area for many years and can create a very bold, tropical look in the garden with its very large leaves. Vernicia fordii produces large clusters of semi fragrant white/pink flowers in the spring that attract bees and other pollinators. Vernicia fordii is reportedly invasive in the deep south and I have seen it reseed occasionally here - but it doesn't appear to be misbehaved in slightly coolers climates like Raleigh, NC. Vernicia fordii makes an excellent, small shade tree where a look of the tropics is desired.
